Google Glasses are hyped. But do they fulfil what they promise? Or are they just another piece of tragedy?

The whole Tech-world is currently going mad about Google’s Project Glass. “It is the future of Google” titled Techcrunch. All the other big media sites from Engadget to The Next Web wrote about the awesome story of skydiving with the new glasses and how it was displayed at the I/O. Everyone was running wild about the glasses, its new technology, the future of Google and the huge potential all of this has.

But what are they talking about really?

Stephen, Google engineer
Stephen, Google engineer

Look at the picture above. What does it look like? A pair of broken glasses? Glasses without glasses? Hipster glasses without glasses? Or even a non-finished pair of glasses, making its carrier look like an idiot who thinks that he is ahead of his time wearing them?

Maybe all of the above, maybe not. Let’s be honest: Project Glass may be a really cool project that pushes boundaries and heralds the start of a new technology era. But at the same time, it reminds me of all that robot technology, which people hail and hype and you would think that there are currently robots running around worldwide, solving global warming and bringing peace to the world. Take a closer look and see, that today’s robots can hardly stand on their own feet, grab something or look around. They are nowhere near the promised and talked about state of evolution. I mean, 16000 computers to recognize cats? Seriously?

Of course, even these achievements are something spectacular and promising, and everything has to start somewhere. Just look at the bulky and huge mobile phones in the 90s, you could use a murder weapon. Nobody would have thought that in 20 years, you would again make bigger phones than those already around and call them tablets!

But presenting something that should be ahead of its time while in fact, it isn’t (Google glasses used for skydiving/biking? Ever heard of GoPro?) is just hypocritical and the attempt to hype something, although it is not show-worthy yet.

So, when stating that I am, in fact, a huge Google fan, I beg you, come back when this thing is shooting lasers, driving my car or washes me automatically. Otherwise, man-up and get some real glasses.

Ok first of all: The whole show around the first Google I/O Keynote and the "presentation" of Google Glass was awesome. I watched it per live-stream and just sat there with my "WTF is going on"-face. I think Google is the company with the best infrastructure to test things like Glass. So why shouldn't they? They just said that they will bring Glass to "a few" people early next year and they have to pay a lot of money. We will see where Glass will go to but if they won't test it out now, we won't find out.

I haven't seen the presentation, so I can't comment on that. It is true that google is one of a few companies worldwide, that is really trying to bring new toys to the game. Things like Google Maps/Street View etc. are only a few to mention. Glass is something completely different but still counts as a breakthrough imho. Maybe it will not be a mass product for the next five years but who cares, it is about rethinking and creating new values, one can build on.

Of course the presentation was something new, especially when looking at Apple's on stage presentations. What I don't like is selling it as something awesome and great if, in fact, there is nothing special about it. Go to youtube and have a look at some GoPro base jumps. I know that it was a live stream (actually a G+ hangout) but reading that all of it was only a last minute stunt (goo.gl/xINwC) reinforces my thoughts, that they just wanted to do something cool and awesome, without a real connection to the product. The product is AT MOST at alpha stage. It's cool to show a glimpse and some possible features but they present it as something finished and ground-breaking for next year. That simply isn't true. Google made a magnificent PR stunt with releasing the first Glasses video. They've destroyed this hype by presenting a funny looking pair of glasses.

i think they said that they don't want to show new features today and just show something cool before they had started the hangout. It was nice to see that Google didn't want to copy Apple presentations one by one. When I have watched the Microsoft Keynote I only thought: This is a bad Apple keynote. Apple knows how to sell there products. I mean they can introduce a fan cooler as everyone will buy it.

As you say, everything jas to start somewhere. At least google has the guts to do so and I'd be more than willing to throw 1,5K their way to get this glasses.

Of course a lot of work was put into these and technology really got driven forward here. But it is the typical Google problem, releasing only half finished products. These take at least another 5 years to make it as a product for the masses.

I'd rather release something half finished than not to be the first to release it. This is how innovation is done, create something, get it out there and improve it on the go. And I am pretty sure that Google has not showed the full potential and all features of the Glasses yet. An the product is not yet for the masses, 1,500 Dollar sure rule some people out.
