Although university could be a fertile breeding ground for new bands, the situation can often become somewhat sterile. Sure you can meet people willing to play together, you have free time to practice and friends to support you; but sometimes things aren’t that simple. Timetable clashes, laziness, essay deadlines and lack of publicity means that sometimes we just don’t hear about these musicians. Especially when the music industry in London moves at such a rapid pace.
Whatever the reason for this apparent impotence, a new and innovative idea means that everything is going to get a great deal easier. Two music-loving graduates have devised a platform for all budding student bands in London. Their first project comes in the form or a ‘Battle of the Bands’-style competition, specially designed to accommodate London’s students. The live contests start this October running through until April 2012, so as to not clash with the exam period. These will begin with series of collegiate rounds followed by intercollegiate rounds, which will be held in ULU from January, sifting out the best acts solely by public voting.
The event will encourage the bands to get up there and play, whilst simultaneously opening the student public’s ears to fresh talent. Remember that Coldplay, Blur and The Rolling Stones were all formed at university. In turn we will help out all the participating bands by providing them with a solid fan base. The prize for the lucky, or should I say, democratically voted winners will be an [EP] recorded in a studio with the help of the acclaimed Charlie Hugall, who produced Florence and the Machine’s You’ve Got The Love.
You can read more about the University Music League and enter your band for FREE before the 5th October at http://www.unimusicleague.com
